Blizzard Next-Gen MMO Titan Gets the Axe


It’s an unfortunate day for Blizzard Entertainment MMO fans.

After several years of development, Blizzard’s stagnating MMO World of Warcraft looks to shoulder the entire load now that the next-gen MMO, code-named Titan, has been officially canceled. Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime made the announcement today stating, “We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs, so we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn’t come together.”

After he revealed some setbacks to the project a couple years ago during Blizzcon, they had sought to redesign the game with a focus on fun. Alas according to Morhaime, “We didn’t find the fun. We didn’t find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that’s the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no.”

He mentioned how hard it was to cancel a project after sinking in so many development hours commenting, “It was hard when we canceled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we canceled Starcraft Ghost, but it has always resulted in better quality work.”

It doesn’t look like Blizzard can replicate the success they had with World of Warcraft, and while he didn’t rule out working on a new MMO in the future, it doesn’t look to be the focus of the company anytime soon.
