The freedom and power is intoxicating.

Far Cry 1 and 2 missed the mark. But there’s something comforting about seeing each iteration of a game improve upon itself. It’s not just a show of fancier graphics with Far Cry 3. Ubisoft really created a rich and vast experience with a solid amount of depth to what you can achieve on Far Cry’s island.

You start off as Jason Brody. Celebrating your young brothers piloting licenses you fly away for a skydiving trip with friends. Unfortunately you land in an island full of pirates, mystery, cartels, and murder. You are captured by the main antagonist Vaas, one of the most memorable video game villains, and you have to escape and find the rest of your friends around the island. You meet a man named Dennis, part of a group of Island warriors named the Rakyat, and help him take back the island from the pirates in your search for your friends. Eventually you meet Citra, the leader of the Rakyat, and a potential love interest, where you are tantalized with the idea staying on the island forever.

The game’s systems are well crafted. You can explore any part of the island you wish as the world is completely open.

  • Hunt the wildlife (tigers, bears, komodo dragons, oh my) and craft upgrades to your gear, such as skinning a pelt to upgrade your wallet or ammunition pouches.
  • Harvest herbs and create heal potions.
  • Take over pirate camps for the Rakyat unlocking the site as a fast travel point.

When you engage in battle you have several choices on how to engage. You can use stealth to assassinate your opponents silently, release caged animals upon your foes, set fire to the buildings and foliage nearby watching as the flames spread possibly burning them alive, or just go in guns blazing and tearing your foes down with a wide assortment of customizable weaponry.

As you complete story and side missions you gain experience unlocking new skills for your character. Side missions include hunting a rare animal with a specific weapon, knifing a captain in the middle of a patrolled camp, helping the islanders with a personal matters, racing, supply runs, arcade styled battle missions restricted to a gun type, and more!

There are several major characters throughout the game and each person you meet is compelling with top notch animations and voice acting to boot. You really end up caring about the world around you and the characters inside of it.  The story drives the action.  The island is a beautiful, lush environment to explore, alive with patrolling natives, pirates, and animals.  Waterways, vistas, hidden nooks, and treasure pack each view with something fun to explore and discover. You can also climb radio towers to get a good lay of the land featuring jumping puzzle adventures to survey the world around you, a nod to assassins creed’s design.
