Remove Recently Viewed Websites from Chrome’s New Tab Update

Posted September 25, 2013 by

After today’s automatic chrome update, you might not be a fan of having your recently browsed sites pop up every time you hit ctrl-t or launch a new tab.

Unfortunately there is no fix for this in the normal settings area.  But fear not, there is a way to disable it in Chrome’s hidden back end.

To remove recently viewed websites from “new tab”, simply:

  1. Go to chrome://flags/ in your browser,
  2. Scroll down till you see “Enable Instant Extended API Mac, Windows, Chrome OS”,
  3. Set it to disabled.

To reverse this change simply go repeat these instructions and set the box back to default or enabled.

That’s all there is to it!
